[UPDATE] Is a flying shark the UFO that almost collided with a plane?

[UPDATE] Is a flying shark the UFO that almost collided with a plane?:
On Tuesday, April 30, we published a story about a passenger plane that nearly collided with a UFO over the Glasgow suburb of Baillieston in December 2012. The pilots reported narrowly missing an unidentified object that was bigger than a balloon and was “blue and yellow (or silver) in colour with a small frontal area.”
The incident was thoroughly investigated by the UK Airprox Board, but the group was unable to identify the UFO. But according to Scotland’s Daily Record, a possible identification has just surfaced.

The Daily Record published a story on Wednesday, May 1 about the near-collision incident. After reading the story, Baillieston resident James Orsmond contacted the Daily Record to report that his son Billy lost his grip on his six-foot-long, helium-filled, remote-controlled shark toy at about the same time the incident with the plane occurred. He explains, “The report said the object was blue and yellow and silvery. I just thought, ‘Aw naw’ because that was the colour of Billy’s remote control shark and it went missing round about the time of the incident.”
A helium-filled, remote-controlled shark toy was also suggested as the likely identification for a UFO captured on video by a twelve-year-old girl in Ohio in March 2012.
Although no official identification has been made regarding the object in Scotland that nearly collided with a plane, Billy’s shark toy is a plausible explanation that fits the description provided by the plane’s pilots.

A plane was dangerously close to colliding with an unidentified flying object on December 2, 2012 over Glasgow, Scotland.
According to the Daily Mail, the Airbus 320 was flying at an altitude of 3,500 feet over the Glasgow suburb of Baillieston as the plane made its approach to Scotland’s Glasgow International Airport. The plane’s pilots describe the UFO as “blue and yellow (or silver) in colour with a small frontal area,” and it was bigger than a balloon. Pilots report the object narrowly missed hitting the plane as it passed three-hundred feet below. The pilots assessed the risk of collision as “High.”

The UK Airprox Board (UKAB), a group that investigates reports of near-collisions, conducted an extensive investigation of the incident. In March 2013, UKAB released its assessment of the case. First, the radio communication between the plane and the tower at Glasgow airport was disclosed in the report. The conversation went as follows:
Plane: “Glasgow Approach [A320 C/S]”

Tower: “[A320 C/S] pass your message”

Plane: “Er yeah we just had something pass underneath us quite close [1255:30] and nothing on TCAS have you got anything on in our area”

Tower: “Er negative er we’ve got nothing on er radar and we’re n- not talking to any traffic either”

Plane: “Er not quite sure what it was but it definitely er quite large [1255:40] and it’s blue and yellow”

Tower: “OK that’s understood er do you have a an estimate for the height”

Plane: “Maybe er [1255:50] yeah we were probably about erm four hundred to five hundred feet above it so it’s probably about three and a half thousand feet.”
Once on the ground, the conversation continued:

Plane: “. . . we seemed to only miss it by a couple of hundred feet it went directly beneath us . . . wherever we were when we called it in it was within about ten seconds . . . couldn’t tell what direction it was going but it went right underneath us”

Tower: “Do you suspect it might have been a glider or something like that”

Plane: “Well maybe a microlight . . . it just looked too big for a balloon.”
The UFO was not detected on radar, and the Board ruled out weather balloons, fixed-wing or rotary-wing aircraft, or man-carrying balloons. The Board was unable to identify the object, and classified the near-collision as a category D degree of risk–the Board’s second to highest level of risk.

Scientist says Atacama humanoid is human but still a mystery

Scientist says Atacama humanoid is human but still a mystery:
The Sirius documentary was finally released and the question as to whether the Atacama humanoid is an extraterrestrial has been resolved, at least according to the scientist who analyzed the DNA, and the results are that he is human. However, the mystery doesn’t end there. Although, it is not an extraterrestrial, their findings show it may have been a 6-inch Chilean human that survived for 6 to 8 years.
These findings may not be the “potentially profound and historical announcement” that many were hoping for. However, no one can argue that a promise the film did make good on was the high level of credibility of the scientists involved with the study.

The lead scientist is Dr. Garry Nolan, a professor of microbiology and immunology at Stanford University’s School of Medicine and the director of Stanford’s Proteomics Center. In the film, Nolan says of the DNS results, “The sequence that we got from the mitochondria [energy factories of cells] tells us with extremely high confidence that the mother was an indigenous Indian from the Chilean area.”
The film ended asking the question whether there still could be a chance the Atacama humanoid, nicknamed ‘Ata,’ was extraterrestrial. In an email response to my question if there are any doubts in his mind, Nolan responded, “The DNA says human.  If someone wants to suggest a way for a non-terrestrial to have the same DNA sequence (nucleotide for nucleotide) as a human, then I think everyone would be interested in their ideas.”
Given its size, the next question would be if Ata is a human fetus. In an earlier study, Dr. Francisco Etxeberria Gabilondo, a professor of Legal and Forensic Medicine in the Basque Country University, had concluded that Ata was “without any shadow of doubt, a completely normal mummified fetus.”
Dr. Nolan says, “As to it being a fetus, I would trust the examination done by my colleague, a known expert in pediatric bone disorders, who came to the surprising conclusion that it was 6-8 years old.”

Although, this claim is astounding, the colleague Nolan is referring to is someone whose opinion should not be taken lightly. He is Dr. Ralph Lachman, Co-Founder and Co-Director of the International Skeletal Dysplasia Registry at Cedars-Sinai. He is also the author of the textbook, Radiology Of Syndromes, Metabolic Disorders And Skeletal Dysplasias, a book referenced by students and practitioners. Skeletal dysplasia is a condition that can cause abnormal bone development, including variations in size and shape.
In his response to the examination of Ata’s radiographic images, Lachman wrote to Nolan:
I have examined in the course of my career many skeletal and other pediatric bone anomalies and dysmorphias. This specimen does not fall under any known, to me, class of disorders or syndromes… there is no known form of dwarfism that accounts for the anomalies seen in this specimen. Most interestingly, based on knee epiphyseal standards, the specimen appears to be 6-8 years old. While there remains a possibility this latter result is due to some form of unknown progeria (rapid aging syndrome), in my opinion this is a low probability.

Nolan stresses that Lachman’s examination was no cursory examination, and they went over the radiographs for hours.  “But while it might be better evidence than size alone,” Nolan continued, “additional evidence would be supportive.  In scientific parlance, the evidence is contradictory, so additional ‘tie breaking’ or ‘trumping’ evidence is needed.”
Nolan plans to continue research on Ata’s anomalous features. He says, “Right now I am looking into independent techniques that might be able to cross-verify the age.  I have some ideas, but I would have to develop some new techniques to test it.”
Nolan’s last statement in the documentary was that he wanted to say more, but couldn’t. I asked him about this statement, and he clarified, “I simply wanted to avoid speculation.  It was not that I had some secret data I wanted to share but could not.”
Although Ata has not turned out to be extraterrestrial, the process of working on the documentary has made Nolan more open to the UFO mystery. He says, “The people I’ve come to meet through this process have convinced me thoroughly the observed phenomena around the planet should not be ignored.  That has been an awakening for me.”

Sirius filmmakers release Atacama humanoid sex and age

Sirius filmmakers release Atacama humanoid sex and age:
As the days count down to the premiere of the UFO documentary, Sirius, the filmmakers have announced they will release their findings on the Atacama humanoid, bit by bit. Today they have released the creature’s name, sex, age, and more pictures.

The Sirius team is calling the creature “Ata,” and claim that their analysis has revealed that the mysterious humanoid is male and survived 6 to 8 years, post-birth. Their findings are the result of bone density and epiphyseal plate studies. They had previously disclosed that their DNA sequencing studies have determined the creature to be a “humanoid of unknown origin.”
The analysis has been conducted by a “top research scientist at a prestigious American university.” However, they are not releasing the name of the university or the researcher for “security purposes.” They do say they will announce this information, along with the DNA analysis, on or before the premiere of the film on April 22.
The team does not give any explanation as to what security concerns they are afraid of, or why these concerns will be resolved within the next few days. However, this isn’t the first time the filmmakers have noted their concerns with safety. In the movie’s summary, they write that UFO researcher, Dr. Steven Greer, “feels the pressure of an imminent assassination attempt.”
The creature has had several owners since its discovery in Chile in 2003, including a bar owner and a wealthy entrepreneur from Barcelona, Spain. Neither has voiced concerns over their safety for having been in contact with the curious carcass. Either way, the slow release of information, and the curiosity over who may want to assassinate Dr. Greer and why, will surely pique the interest of potential moviegoers and help the Sirius team’s promotional efforts.

As Open Minds reported in an earlier story, a previous analysis by a forensic anthropologist in Spain came to a more mundane conclusion. Several years ago the humanoid was examined by Dr. Francisco Etxeberria Gabilondo, a professor of Legal and Forensic Medicine in the Basque Country University, and a specialist in Forensic Anthropology at Complutense University. Dr. Gabilondo concluded:
Taken as a whole, the proportions of the anatomical structures (skeleton and softer parts), the level of development of each one of its bones and its macroscopic configuration, allow us to interpret it without any shadow of doubt as a completely normal mummified fetus…
The Sirius filmmakers have said they believe the findings in their analysis of Ata will “completely change the reality of human existence.” So far they have only mentioned the findings of one researcher, and for any significant scientific discovery, it is necessary that several reputable researchers and laboratories confirm the findings of the first. The research of one lab may get the ball rolling, but it is usually a long road to scientific confirmation.

The prospect of the Sirius film inspiring the scientific community to take a harder look at the humanoid is an exciting one. No doubt we will be reading about more juicy tidbits in the next few days to come.
